マルチリンガル教育センター 特任准教授 Stringer Thomas James先生
Since first arriving in Japan from the UK in 2008, I have built a career around English language teaching, teacher development, and learner autonomy. What began as classroom teaching gradually expanded into wider work in higher education, research, publishing, and professional communities connected to language education in Japan and beyond.
I am currently a doctoral candidate in TESOL (DProf TESOL) at the University of St Andrews (Scotland), a Fellow of the UK Higher Education Academy, and a Specially Appointed Associate Professor at the Center for Multilingual Education at University of Osaka. I joined the school in October 2025, and I continue to be inspired daily by the wonderful students and faculty.
Alongside my teaching and research, I have become increasingly involved in academic publishing and professional learning. I serve as Editorial Assistant for both Professional Development in Education and Practice academic journals, and I am also Co-Editor-in-Chief of the St Andrews Journal of International and Language Education (SAJILE), a journal focused on connecting research and classroom practice. I think that a really good way to improve one’s own writing is to help others with theirs.
Over the years, my interests in autonomy and professional learning have also led me to contribute to a range of international communities and initiatives. I work as Social Media Manager for the IATEFL Learner Autonomy SIG, co-lead the CILTER Learner Autonomy Hub, and created the Language Learner Autonomy Research Portal to support researchers and practitioners interested in autonomy-related work. I am also co-investigator on the funded project SAJILE and beyond: Building a practice-focused journal and supportive community of practice, which reflects my broader commitment to creating supportive spaces for teachers and researchers. Especially in this day and age when many forces push people apart, it is even more important to build communities and connections.
My research mainly focuses on language learner and teacher development, particularly through the lens of autonomy. My work has appeared in international peer-reviewed journals including Research Synthesis in Applied Linguistics, Innovation in Language Learning and Teaching, Educational Action Research, and Learning: Research and Practice. Basically, I think when students and teachers learn to approach their roles with a research mindset, everybody benefits.

マルチリンガル教育センター 特任准教授 孫樹喬先生
2025年4月にマルチリンガル教育センターの特任准教授として着任いたしました孫樹喬と申します。専門は中国語学、日中対照言語学です。このたび、全学共通教育における中国語教育に携わる機会をいただき、微力ながらも貢献できますことを大変光栄に思っております。
私は中国の東北部で生まれ育ち、上海にある同済大学に進学して日本語を学び始めました。言語に興味を持つようになったきっかけは、南方出身の同級生たちの話す多様な方言を聞いても、その意味が全く分からなかったことによる“カルチャーショック”でした。大学では中国語とは発音も文法も大きく異なる日本語を学ぶ中で、言語や文化の多様性に驚きと発見を重ねる日々でした。修士論文の執筆を通じて、日本語と中国語の比較研究にますます魅了され、より深く研究を進めたいとの思いから、神戸市外国語大学の博士課程に進学いたしました。
私の研究は、主に文法や表現に関する日中対照研究です。中でも、話し手の主観的な態度を表す表現に長く関心を持ち、とりわけ話し言葉における「意志」を表す表現について、日中の言語を比較しながら研究を進めてまいりました。これらの研究を通じて、両言語における形式・意味・機能の特徴を明らかにし、意志表現の全体像を捉えたうえで、共通点や相違点を探ることを目指してきました。現在は、日本語との対照を踏まえつつ、意志表現と未来テンスとの関係についても取り組んでおります。今後は、主観性を表すさまざまな文法形式、特に日本語ではうまく説明しきれない中国語の助動詞や感情動詞などについても焦点を当てていきたいと考えています。主観性表現が豊かに発達しているとされる日本語と比較することで、中国語における主観性の特質やそのあり方を明らかにしていくことを、長期的な研究の目標として掲げております。
また、教育の現場においては、学習者が主観性を表す表現、たとえば助動詞や語気助詞、感情副詞などの理解や運用に困難を感じている様子をしばしば目にします。こうした課題を踏まえ、研究成果を生かした効果的な教授法や教材の開発にも取り組み、中国語教育に実践的に貢献していきたいと考えております。
私自身、日本語学習を通じて、外国語を学ぶことは単に言語そのものを習得するだけでなく、その背後にある文化や歴史、価値観への理解を深める旅でもあると実感しています。現在、第2外国語教育と国際理解教育の授業を担当させていただいておりますが、受講される皆さんと共にことばを学びながら、中国語と日本語の表現の違いや共通点に目を向け、言語を通して異文化への理解を少しずつ深めていけたらと願っております。
大阪大学にご縁をいただいたことは、1年前には想像もしていなかったことであり、この貴重な機会に心から感謝しております。これからも、多くのすばらしい言語研究者の皆さまとともに学び、成長してまいりたいと存じます。今後ともどうぞよろしくお願い申し上げます。
マルチリンガル教育センター 特任助教 新原由希恵先生
2025 年 4 月にマルチリンガル教育センターに着任しました新原由希恵と申します。専門は応用言語学、学習者のモチベーション研究です。幼少期から海外で過ごしていたこともあり、多言語・多文化に自然と興味を持ち上智大学の英語学科では言語の授業として中国語とアメリカ手話の授業を受講していました。また理系学部の英文会計や科学技術英語の授業を受講するなど少しでも言語に関連した授業でも学んでいました。総合大学であれば他学科の聴講ができるので、空きコマがある方にはオススメの時間の使い方です！学部時代は男子軟式野球サークル、大学院時代は乗馬をしていました。しっかりとリフレッシュしながら学び続けることが大切だと思っております。これからも楽しみながら学びを深め、研究に励みたいと思っております。どうぞよろしくお願いいたします。
My main research areas are Foreign Language Education and Applied Linguistics, with a focus on motivation. I became interested in motivation because I have always been highly motivated when it comes to language learning. My initial research focused on the English learning methods of Japanese elementary school children. I grew up in a multicultural environment in the US and the UK due to my father’s job. During that time, I learned Spanish at a summer school and French as a compulsory subject (a second language), which sparked my passion for language learning.
While studying English Language and Studies at Sophia University, I also began learning American Sign Language and Chinese. Although I haven’t yet mastered these languages, I remain eager to continue learning new languages throughout my life. Currently, I’m studying Chinese and Korean on Duolingo, and I also aim to learn Portuguese, Russian, and Malay.
When it comes to teaching, I really enjoy creating classes that encourage a lot of communication, even in reading or writing lessons. I used to play team sports like football, baseball, and netball, where teamwork and frequent discussions were key to achieving our goals (sometimes, we just chatted, honestly). Those experiences taught me that positive, shared moments are essential for motivation, whether it’s in a game, learning a new language, or exploring new topics. If you join my class, even if you’re not interested in language learning or if you’ve struggled with studying in the past, I’ll greet you with a big smile and do my best to make the class enjoyable and worthwhile. I want you to leave feeling that the class was interesting and meaningful in some way.
